About
Urpi pampa is a textile artwork created as the result of a community project at Casita de los Picaflores in Urquillos, Peru. Inspired by birds — free creatures that travel the world without borders or visas — the piece serves as a reminder of the value of loyalty and mutual support.
After observing the sky, local children drew and printed various birds: those they know, those they discovered during the project, the ones they love, and those from their dreams, weaving them together with their own stories.
Guided by these narratives, the women of the village, along with some of the children, joined the pieces together through thread and embroidery. This textile reflects the essence of Urquillos: a united community that supports one another and knows how to fly as a team.
Technique: Block printing and hand embroidery
Materials: Water-based textile ink and thread on tocuyo (unbleached cotton) fabric
